Importance of Meta Tags in Directories

Many SEO’s may tell you that meta tags are a forgotten importance among search engine optimization these days. However, with directories, it’s a must when setting up category structure and detail pages.

Why are meta tags important in directories?

  • Meta Tags allow each category to have a separate and unique set of keywords.
  • Meta Tags allow each category to have a separate and unique description.
  • On Detail Pages, website owners can set their own unique description and keywords to help their listing get indexed in the SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages).

Why does that matter?

  • Meta Tags allow Google and other search engines to distinguish between categories in the directory. Some directories may have thousands of categories and without meta tags to distinguish them, they are duplicate results.
  • Many categories and detail pages without meta tags and without link building sit in the supplemental results of Google until they can be seen as unique.

Writing unique keywords and descriptions for every category can be a arduous task, so my advice is:

  • Set up the initial category structure and add to it in waves. Don’t over exert yourself and get burnt out on the first day. Instead, add categories in handfuls or as needed. No need to rush.
  • Hire someone to help you out. If you find that the writing is too time consuming or monotonous, hire someone to write out descriptions and keywords for your categories. This may be the most costly step, but it’s also the less stressful.

After following those few pointers, you’ll be well on your way out of the supplemental results and on with a more quality, search engine friendly directory.
